When you are not bound by the budget, we can choose almost any option that seems to be the best in performance but if you are limiting the spending, we need to shop wiser. Brands like Crucial and Kingston are among the best choices to shop from based on their track record of product quality. They also have a huge amount of variants to choose from based on how much you want to spend, from the entry-level to those most advanced in the collection.

If you are shopping on a tight budget, the Crucial BX500 and Kingston A400 are two ideal options on the entry-level. These SSDs even start from $24 for the 120GB but the variant we are choosing today is their 480GB option to provide a more sufficient space. These are quite an old option in 2021 but still a solid choice for the budget. The two are about the same in price point with the BX500 being slightly pricier and for the interface they are also the same SATA 3.

In comparison, we do think you can go amazing with either Crucial BX500 or Kingston A400 because they are not far different or almost identical to each other despite coming from different brands. Side by side benchmarking will show you that the BX500 is just a bit faster than the A400 but it is so small that we are not sure whether it will be noticeable in typical day to day application. We also like that these drives are effective in power consumption.

Crucial BX500 and Kingston A400 Design

From the outside, the Crucial BX500 and Kingston A400 are just like any small SSDs in the market with SATA interface. They are coming with nothing but the drive itself so for some you may want to get the SATA cable as well. As you can expect, they are made of cheaper material too but the BX500 feels like it has some metal on the construction. As for the form factor, they are the same or 2.5-inches but the Crucial indeed looks more attractive design wise.

Just like with most SSDs, thankfully these two are also coming with warranty that we can count on to and they are equally limited to three years. The difference is that for this 480GB variant Crucial will give endurance warranty up to 120 TBW compared to only 80 TBW on Kingston. Crucial BX500 and Kingston A400 Benchmark

Now for the most important part, let’s see how the Crucial BX500 and Kingston A400 perform and which of them will be the better option too. Starting from the sequential read performance, it is easy to see that the BX500 is slightly faster at 540MB/s compared to the A400 at 400MB/s while the sequential write itself is also showing a similar result at 500MB/s and 450MB/s respectively. It is not a huge gap but there is still a difference and sometimes you may notice it too in real-life.

Still using the userbenchmark, the result is slightly different when it comes to random read speed because the A400 is just a shy higher here at 27MB/s compared to 26.4MB/s while the random write speed is coming back to the previous result or slightly better for the BX500 at 65MB/s and 64.8MB/s side by side. Overall, in comparison these drives are pretty much the same with BX500 showing you a higher edge over the A400 in most tests but not by much either.

Crucial BX500 and Kingston A400 Performance 

Being an entry-level choice, we don’t think Crucial BX500 and Kingston A400 are wise options for those whose main focus is gaming or using heavy software on the computer since none of them has a DRAM cache. In real-world performance they are not the best, especially when compared to the kind of Samsung EVO or the WD Blue 3D and even the big brother of BX series or the MX line. However, compared to HDD the two should be noticeably better too.

Crucial BX500 and Kingston A400 Power Consumption

Lastly we want to talk about the power consumption of these drives and in general they are not bad at all. In terms of power consumption, they are effectively using it during the heavy load and idle but in comparison the A400 seems to be just slightly lower at 0.19W when idle or 1.5W when it is writing while the BX500 is also 1.5W on average but about 0.4W when the low power feature is deactivated. In general, these two are very good at managing consumption.


Choosing between Crucial BX500 and Kingston A400 can be quite confusing because both have pros and cons which translate well from the price point. You can go amazing with any of the two with considerably managed expectations too, and in the overall performance BX500 will have a slight edge over the A400, just like how it is also a bit more expensive. The power consumption is about the same and the real-world performance is not far apart, making the two solid options in the price range.

These SSD may not be as interesting or extraordinary considering they are on the entry-level side but should be a wise upgrade from the HDD to improve your computer’s performance. We will recommend the BX500 over the slight difference in overall performance but the A400 is also a good choice at a cheaper price.
