Just like most products these drives are also coming in a wide range of price points from the very affordable to those quite expensive. Chances are the performance will be better on those expensive alternatives.

However, when it comes to SSD, depending on how demanding the task we often work on the computer, not everyone will need the fastest and the most expensive drives so we advise to choose based on your needs. Crucial and Samsung for example are two powerhouses when it comes to SSD because they are very popular and this popularity is backed by their product quality. You will find a wide range of SSDs from both companies and it is very easy to set them apart based on the price point.

Typically Samsung is carrying the premium line of drives so they are more expensive as well such as how the Crucial BX500 and Samsung 870 EVO are different from each other. Currently you need to spend about $50 more to get the 870 EVO 1TB compared to the BX500 at the same capacity. In comparison, performance wise the latter will be a higher option as well so testing will show how fast it is than the other drive and this is also similar to 860 EVO which is the older version of the 870 EVO.

860 EVO is one of the best performing drives in its price range based on the performance testing but it is also quite expensive compared to many other similarly capable SSDs including the BX500. Now for the 870 EVO, there is an even higher upgrade which can be used as a shopping decision whether spending the extra budget will benefit you a lot in real-life application or, it is still wise to go with the BX500 which is still a very capable option today.

Crucial BX500 and Samsung 870 EVO Design

Before getting into what these Crucial BX500 and Samsung 870 EVO can offer, let’s check out the unit first but, similar to typical 2.5-inch SSD with SATA interface, the two are just identical. EVO line has this identical design so you need to read the model name on the back to know what series it belongs to. The BX line is more sophisticated here because you can see what line it belongs to from the face of the product and the complete information on the back.

Build quality wise they are pretty good but 870 EVO is using an anodized aluminum case which feels rather expensive compared to the mix of metal and plastic of the BX500. When you open up the case, there is a small PCB inside which is good to maintain the form factor and cost. Specs wise these two are using Micron’s 96 Layers TLC with Silicon Motion SM2259XT and Samsung 128L TLC with MKX ‘Metis’ controller respectively for the 1TB variant.

Moving further, let’s see what the Crucial BX500 and Samsung 870 EVO can offer when it comes to real-life performance because they are quite different here and in general the 860 EVO was already better compared to BX500 so it is not surprising to see how good the new version is with the 128 TLC and new controller. Using games, the loading time of Samsung is about twice as fast compared to the BX500 but if you get the MX500, the gap is not going to be as much.

Using trace testing with typical software we are working with on the computer or laptop, the result is also very similar and even more noticeable with a score that comes about three times faster than the BX500 so it is no doubt that the drive is very capable not only on paper but also for the real-world applications.

Next is for those who are working with larger datasets and need a drive that can work fast for better experience. Through DiskBench we can measure the data transfer for Crucial BX500 and Samsung 870 EVO. In comparison the file transfer using 870 EVO will be much faster as well and this is about 3 to 4 times for the same dataset. However, when it comes to read performance the two are very similar which is surprising because it means the 870 EVO is not far different from its predecessor.

For the sequential performance, both drives are working really well and while you can notice the difference in consistency between Crucial BX500 and Samsung 870 EVO, the two are very promising. But, since there is DRAM-less, it will be less consistent.

Lastly, we want to talk about the power consumption of Crucial BX500 and Samsung 870 EVO which are also quite different from each other because in terms of efficiency the latter is actually higher here. We do think they will be about the same on average but also, it depends on the capacity of the drive that you choose. In comparison the idle power of BX500 is much lower however or about the same to 860 QVO from Samsung when the ASPM or LPM is enabled.


Both Crucial BX500 and Samsung 870 EVO are good options but probably for different types of users. In general it is easy to say that the 870 EVO will be the high performing drive in comparison because it is faster and overall comes with better specs but, it is not a must have too in case you don’t need the level of performance. For typical day to day work BX500 is still a good upgrade over HDD but if you are working with large data or gaming too, we do think getting the 870 EVO will be more suitable.

The choice is all yours because not everyone has the same tasks to do but we will recommend BX500 as an upgrade from HDD and for typical applications but if you want the higher performing drive, the 870 EVO is a very promising option.
