Besides the NAND update, Samsung also comes with a pretty significant controller upgrade. Even though the underlying architecture is still based on the triple-core Cortex R4, the controllers now run at 4000MHz, which is improved from 300MHz in its previous version and make 840 EVO able to perform better than the original model. This improvement also seen as an update to SATA 3.1 that brought some interesting features, such as support for queued TRIM commands.
This SSD has AES-256 encryption and has its PSID printed on each drive label just like what you can find in Crucial M500, so if there is an event where you lost the drive encryption key, you may use the PSID to unlock the drive, even though you will still lose the data. When it was launched, 840 EVO doesn’t support TCG Opal and Microsoft’s eDrive spec but the later firmware update makes it enable these things and brought EVO and Crucial M500 encryption feature in par.
