Talking about the consumer-based SSDs market, you can never leave Samsung out of the main players because of how active and how good their products are. This brand also carries quite the options from both cheap to enterprise models and in recent years, they have the famous 970 EVO and 970 EVO Plus. The former was released earlier in 2018 alongside the MLC based 970 EVO Pro and the latter was pretty new yet not fresh anymore by introduction in the next year.

Samsung moved from 48-layer TLC to 64-layer TLC was apparent since the PM981 and in 2018 they did use Phoenix controller to replace Polaris with the original 970 EVO. As for the new 1TB, it is now rated with 3.3GB/s writes to SLC cache in which the older drive is 2.5GB/s while it becomes 1.75GB/s compared to 1.25GB/s when the cache is full, making it about 20% better.

In this test the scores are based on total application response time as seen by the user including both storage latency and time spent by the processor. This allows limitation to how much a storage improvement will affect the scores as the driver only in use for a small fraction of the total test duration.
The test section is separated into creativity, productivity, and responsiveness which shows the new 970 EVO Plus indeed delivers slightly higher performance than not only the original 970 EVO but also previous TLC-based SSD yet not capable of competing against the powerful 900P. What’s surprising is in the productivity test, somehow the smaller 250GB 970 EVO Plus is beating its 1TB variant. On both productivity and creativity side, while there is improvement over the original drive, it is very slight to be meaningful.

The next useful test we want to mention here is for random read and write as well as their power efficiency and the results shows 970 EVO Plus to have a slight improvement over its predecessor’s performance IO test but still no match for 250GB 900P. For the power efficiency, they are not better than the leading SN750 and in general both Samsung 970 EVO and 970 EVO Plus are more or less the same in this section while both also similarly picking up speed as the workload tends to be more write heavy.

The prominent difference between the two is Samsung new 92-layer 3D NAND which you can experience in the 970 EVO Plus but in real-life situations, it seems that both are almost the same when it comes to performance except for the post-cache writes speed as it is among few tops measured in TLC drives. Since they have the same controller, the power efficiencies are also the same and overall, the difference between the two is not very visible side by side.
These are amazing drives for the cost and performance wise but the new is not always the best and while EVO Plus indeed improves what’s EVO was already good at, the price point still suggests that 970 EVO especially the 1TB variant is overall the wiser option for the budget.
