Fast and reliable storage devices are on high demand for so many years and many companies are trying to meet that demand by releasing their own storage devices on the market. Among many types of storage devices, SSD has become the king of performance and price for the average consumers. There are plenty of brands that have released their own SSD, but Samsung and Western Digital are still two of the most popular brands worldwide.

Samsung has their EVO series while WD has their Blue series. We’re going to compare Samsung SSD 860 EVO and WD Blue 3D NAND and see which one is a better purchase. There are many factors that can affect the result, such as speed, price, warranty, software, and more. Let’s start with the reviews of both products.

Samsung SSD 860 EVO Review

Samsung SSD 860 EVO is clearly one of the most popular SSDs out there. It’s priced at $199 for the 1TB version on Amazon. Pretty expensive for an SSD but the fact that many people are still buying it means there is something more to it.

Samsung boasts of their V-NAND technology that offers optimized performance for big data read and write for their SSD. Samsung SSD 860 EVO also has secure encryption Aes 256-Bit Hardware-Based Encryption Compliant with Tcg Opal and Ieee 1667, 5-year limited warranty and 1,5 million hours of reliability. Powered by 64-layer V-NAND technology that contains flash cells stacked vertically for greater speed and density, many people consider Samsung SSD 860 EVO to be the king of SSD. The 2TB version has a special LPDDR4 DREAM that is paired with MJX SATA controller

The M.2 SATA version of 860 can achieve speeds up to 560MBps in sequential read and up to 550MBps in sequential write. The 2.5-inch drive version is slightly below that.

Samsung SSD 860 EVO has managed to surpass its predecessor, the 850 in terms of performance. There are around 60MB/s improvement in both sequential read and write. Compared to an Intel SSD 540s Series SSD, Samsung SSD 860 EVO is still faster overall and even costs less.

The endurance of this drive is also improved. The Total Bytes Written or TBW is 4 times larger than before. 850 has 300TB of TBW and 860 has 1200TBW. That is a huge number for an SSD and many professional users would love that feature.

Samsung SSD 860 EVO is without a doubt a great SSD. The improvements Samsung has made from 850 are outstanding. Faster speeds and four times more endurance. The downside is of course the price tag. Many people would not want to buy this SSD because there are many cheaper alternatives out there. But for people with enough budget or companies or professionals out there who are looking for the best SSD to work with than Samsung SSD 860 EVO. That being said, the price is actually competitive enough to be considered “affordable”.

WD Blue 3D NAND Review

WD Blue 3D NAND is priced at $128 for the 1TB version on Amazon. It has 1.75 million hours of mean time to failure or MTTF, up to 500TB of TBW, 5-year limited warranty, and free software.

The WD Blue 3D NAND SATA SSD utilizes 3D NAND technology for capacities up to 4TB with enhanced reliability. Featuring an active power draw up to 25% lower than previous generations of WD Blue SSDs, you’re able to work longer before recharging your laptop, while sequential read speeds up to 560MB/s and sequential write speeds up to 530MB/s give the speed you want for your most demanding computing applications.

With the packaging you get the drive and a tiny warranty guide document. The software and other tools that you might need are available on Western Digital website. The software isn’t special or anything like that. It can monitor the drive and show information such as health, operating hours, temperature, and more. You can also find Acronis True Image WD Edition here, it can be used to clone your OS to the SSD. All the features are free and will work with any WD SSD products. The downside compared to Samsung SSD 860 EVO is that there is no encryption feature.

WD Blue 3D NAND has two versions available, 2.5-inch drive and M.2 and the capacity goes up to 4TB. The price is much lower compared to Samsung 860 EVO, making it the best alternative that you can buy.

WD Blue 3D NAND is rated for 100TBW for every 250GB that means if you have the 250GB version you can write up to 100TBW of data. For average users this means the SSD can last around 10 years. So, you don’t have to worry about the longevity.

The performance is really amazing. WD Blue 3D NAND SATA can achieve the speed of 563 MBps for reads and 536MBps for writes on CrystalDiskMark 6.0.0. These numbers are surprisingly high for a drive that is connected to SATA. Even during long writing and reading tests, WD Blue 3D NAND can maintain its speed well. Something that not many SSDs can do. With more than 25GB sized file transfer, WD Blue 3D NAND write speed goes down to 450MBps.

Verdict
Samsung SSD 860 EVO is clearly the better SSD here solely for the fact that it can write more data, has more features and faster. But it’s considerably more expensive compared to WD Blue 3D NAND. The higher the capacity, the higher the price difference is. The average hours won’t need or notice the performance difference between these two drives and the insane amount of TBW is also unnecessarily high.
While Samsung 860 EVO is more reliable for advanced users, we can’t really recommend it for the average user. WD Blue 3D NAND is the better purchase for most people. It’s fast, affordable, and can last for many years. Also, if you’re looking to buy a 2TB or even 4TB SSD, WD Blue 3D NAND is available at much lower price.
