Both SK Hynix Gold S31 and Samsung 860 Evo are popular SSDs and quite on par with each other when it comes to performance and durability. But there are some key differences between the two that might change your mind in terms of deciding which one is better for you.

In this article we’re going to review both SSDs, from price, performance, features, durability, and more and come with a verdict. Keep in mind that the final decision is on you, and there might not be a winner at all, since we must adjust the value of the SSD depending on different factors.

SK Hynix Gold S31 Review

SK Hynix Gold S31 500GB is priced at $79 on Amazon. It’s advertised as a premium SSD with top tier speed with 560MB/s for read speed and 525Mb/s for write speed, 1.5 million hours MTBF, 300 TB of written data, and 5-year warranty.

SK Hynix is relatively new in the market, and they’re trying to appeal to consumers by offering their SSD at lower price. This is of course good for customers. There are already reviews from people who consider this SSD to be one of the best SSDs on the market.

SK Hynix Gold S31 is a 2,5-inch SSD that uses SATA III interface, just like other SSDs. SK Hynix Gold S31 uses its own proprietary controller that delivers great performance for both read and write. The benchmark result from CrystalDiskMark shows that the SSD works as advertised.

Another benchmark result with an ATTO disk also shows the same result. You don’t have to worry about performance anymore. You pretty much get what you pay for.

As for the capacity, SK Hynix Gold S31 is maxed at 1 TB only. If you’re looking for more than 1 TB, then you’ll have to look at other brands. The TBW they promised is also the same as Samsung 860 Evo. Using the 500 GB model, the TBW is 300. Meaning that the SSD can write up to 300 TBW before needing to be replaced.

On the software side there is nothing special about SK Hynix Gold S31. There is a software that can help you migrate data from your old hard drive to the new one. And that’s it, there is no other fancy feature unlike what Samsung has, which we’re going to talk about later.

Now let’s talk about pricing, which is the best thing about this SSD. Compared to 860 Evo, SK Hynix Gold S31 250GB is $10 cheaper, while the 1 TB version is $31 cheaper. If you’re planning to build a computer, you can use the money for something else like a processor, video card, and PSU.

Overall, SK Hynix Gold S31 is a great and affordable SSD. People with a high budget might prefer to get the most popular brand when choosing an SSD and be done with it. But other people with a tight budget might have to do a little bit more research. SK Hynix Gold S31 is the perfect solution for that, it’s cheaper than Samsung SSD, has great performance, huge amount of written data, and long warranty. Also, you might be able to find SK Hynix Gold S31 at a discount price often than not.

Samsung 860 Evo Review

Samsung 860 Evo 500GB is without a doubt one of the most popular SSD on the market. It’s priced at $94, with 550MB/s read transfer rate, 520MB/s write transfer rate, can go up to 4TB in storage size, 300 TBW and 5-year warranty.

Like we said before, both SSDs are almost the same in term of performance. But Samsung 860 Evo got the edge over SK Hynix. Here is the benchmark result using CrystalDiskMark.

Test ReadSpeedWrite speed
Seq Q32T1562.5 MB/s534.9 MB/s
4KiB Q8T8406.1 MB/s378.8 MB/s
4KiB Q32T1321 MB/s299.7 MB/s
4KiB Q1T141.89 MB/s115.5 MB/s

While SK Hynix Gold excels at smaller file sizes transfer speed, Samsung 860 Evo is better at transferring large file sizes. Other than that, the benchmark result is similar. Samsung 860 Evo’s TBW or Terabytes Written is exactly the same as SK Hynix Gold S31, but Samsung 860 Evo can go up to 4TB in storage size. 2TB has 1,200 TBW and 4TB has 2,400 TBW. The average users won’t be even close to the max TBW within 5-year warranty period.

As for the software, Samsung 860 Evo is better. Thanks to Samsung’s Magician storage software. Magician can monitor performance and apply optimization to make sure that the SSD is running at full speed. There is also a Rapid Mode that allows the SSD to pull resources from other hardware installed on your PC and enhance the transfer speed. Despite its name, the software can’t perform a miracle. It will boost the SSD’s speed but still be limited to the drive’s maximum performance. But then again, this is a lot more features compared to SK Hynix Gold S31.

Samsung 860 Evo’s prices are higher than SK Hynix. For some people the price is worth it to get the most performance for their computer. Also, if you’re looking for an SSD with large storage size, Samsung 860 Evo is the clear winner here. Even with the very expensive price tag for 4TB size, if you really need the space, you’ll find it worth the money.

Verdict
SK Hynix Gold S31 is great for a lot of people who want the best SSD with an affordable price. Most people won’t even notice the speed difference compared to Samsung 860 Evo and don’t care about the additional features that Magician has.
Also, when it comes to SSD 1TB is the limit for the majority of people since 2TB and above for SSD is very expensive at the moment. But then again, if you want something safe, Samsung 860 Evo is always available for you.
