Who does not know Western Digital? The brand has established itself as one of the leading manufacturers in the field of digital data storage devices: flash drives, HDDs, and of course SSDs. Quite not so recently, the manufacturer has released an exciting series of HDD models, often called as the WD Rainbow as each model is named after a particular color. Some time ago, we compared the differences between WD Purple and WD Red. This time, however, we are going to compare WD Purple against WD Black, as apparently some people are confused in choosing between these products. Let us read about WD Purple and WD Black now!
WD Purple is designed specially for home or small business surveillance purposes. Unlike a general-purpose HDD, an HDD for monitoring and video system requires quite a different configuration. It has a lower spin rate compared to regular HDDs in order to read and write video data well. WD Purple features the AllFrame Technology that helps in reducing pixelation errors and video interruptions, which often occur when an HDD is being used as a data storage in a security system. WD Purple is recommended for a system with up to 32 cameras. WD Purple is armed with WD’s 3D Active Balance Plus vibration protection that allows up to eight drives to be used together in the same system, also TLER support for RAID arrays. WD Purple is also notable for silent operation and low heat.
WD Black is a consumer-grade HDD that boasts exceptional performance. Unlike WD Purple, it does not have extensive features, like vibration protection and TLER support, so you cannot use it simultaneously with other drives or in a RAID environment. It is also not as quiet, and generate more heat. Nevertheless, it is more suitable as a general-purpose HDD because it has much higher performance. It is a lot faster, thanks to the increased cache size and the dual-core processor.

As the conclusion, you should choose WD Purple only if you are going to use the device for a video or surveillance system. Otherwise, WD Purple will not provide the fullest value. For a casual, general-purpose data storage, something that you will plant in a regular standard PC, you must opt for WD Black for the best performance!
